Why is migration necessary?

Microsoft supports its products for a certain period of time. This one is called “Support Life Cycle”. Depending on the product, this period varies from 18 months to several years. Support on Microsoft SQL Server 2008 ended in July 2019. The next version that is no longer supported is SQL Server 2012. Support for this will end in July 2022. This means that you now have to think about the upgrade to a new version. The importance of a new version is therefore great. Because, first of all, if the mainstream support expires, it means that Microsoft is no longer improving the product. Secondly, no warranty can be claimed anymore. Finally, no more hotfixes (security updates) will be released after extended support. In addition to hotfixes, bug fixes and other important patches will expire after extended support. In short, your SQL Server is outdated with all the dangers that come with it!

What can you do?

What can you do to keep a safe environment? The answer is obvious. Upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft SQL Server. If your applications do not (yet) support this, you can always look at SQL Server 2017 or 2016.
