Microsoft SQL Server Migration

Migrate your Microsoft SQL Server environment

Migreer Microsoft SQL Server met DBA.nlMigrate your Microsoft SQL Server environment with! Migrating a database environment is not one of the most popular IT projects. Some organizations can’t wait to get started with the latest version of Microsoft SQL Server. But most of the users want to wait as long as possible with the upgrade. After all, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Questions that are asked are for example: “Are my applications compatible with the latest version?” and “Is my hardware still sufficient?”. The answers to these questions are the starting point for a good migration.

Why is migration necessary?

Microsoft supports its products for a certain period of time. This one is called “Support Life Cycle”. Depending on the product, this period varies from 18 months to several years. Support on Microsoft SQL Server 2008 ended in July 2019. The next version that is no longer supported is SQL Server 2012. Support for this will end in July 2022. This means that you now have to think about the upgrade to a new version. The importance of a new version is therefore great. Because, first of all, if the mainstream support expires, it means that Microsoft is no longer improving the product. Secondly, no warranty can be claimed anymore. Finally, no more hotfixes (security updates) will be released after extended support. In addition to hotfixes, bug fixes and other important patches will expire after extended support. In short, your SQL Server is outdated with all the dangers that come with it!

What can you do?

What can you do to keep a safe environment? The answer is obvious. Upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft SQL Server. If your applications do not (yet) support this, you can always look at SQL Server 2017 or 2016.
The consultants of can advise you on this. By migrating to a newer or the latest version, you know that your SQL environment will be supported again for quite some time. For example, the extended support on SQL Server 2019 runs until August 1, 2030.
As can be seen in the overview below, the end of extended support for SQL Server 2012 is approaching and the end of support for 2012 and 2014 is also in sight. An overview of all updates can be found here, on the Microsoft website.

However, there is a fundamental difference between SQL Server and Azure SQL. Namely, in SQL Server, databases are the only entity on the database server. In contrast, in SQL Azure, a single database can host databases from different customers. In other words, Azure SQL is multi-tenant and therefore shares its physical resources with all clients that use this service.
Some other advantages of Azure SQL are firstly the management and administration is relatively easy. Second, High availability, this is guaranteed because Azure is known for it. Third, Azure SQL is easily scalable
